February marks the return of Raynaud's Awareness Month in the UK.

Raynaud's is a common condition that is believed to affect up to 10 million people in the UK alone. It is a condition that causes a person's arteries and blood vessels to become narrower, therefore restricting blood flow to the fingers and toes. The result of this condition can be skin colour changes as well as extreme pain (1).

Key Points:

  • The causes of Raynaud's & How to test for it
  • Avoiding or minimising a Raynaud's attack
  • Overview of treatments for Raynaud's
  • KYMIRA® Infrared's beneficial effects

Raynaud's can be caused by various factors, such as stress and emotional changes. Luckily, there are several ways to treat the sydrome and minimise its intensity.

What causes Raynaud's?

Although the full cause of Raynaud's is unknown, there are some factors that we know of that causes a Raynaud's attack. These are temperature changes, stress and emotional changes, hormone changes or the use of vibrating tools (2).

How can I test for Raynaud's?

If you feel like you may have Raynaud's, book an appointment with your GP.

Whilst there is no known test for Raynaud's, your GP will be able to test your symptoms and rule out other conditions to diagnose you.

To test your symptoms your GP may ask you to perform a water test (where you place your hands under cold water) and see if you exhibit any symptoms of Raynaud's.

Thereafter you may then be asked to have a blood test to check for other health conditions that may be causing your symptoms (3).

What if I am diagnosed with Raynaud's?

Raynaud's is a non-contagious condition, so you will not need to worry about infecting someone else, however there are several measures that you can implement that can help you to avoid and minimise a Raynaud's attack (4).

These are:

Limiting or avoiding the usage of vibrating tools Keep your temperature regulated throughout the year Try to avoid stress as best you can Avoid vasoconstricting drugs Move regularly Stop smoking

What treatments are available for Raynaud's?

There are also several different treatment options that can help you manage Raynaud's. These include:

Prescribed medications that can boost circulation can be prescribed by your GP for worsening conditions. Nerve surgery. In extreme cases, Doctors may perform small incisions in the affected areas to strip the nerves around the blood vessels, which can lead to fewer and less exaggerated attacks. Chemical injections. These can provide short term relief of symptoms; however, these may need to be repeated over time (5). Complementary and alternative therapies. This includes omega-3 fatty acids - which can reduce symptoms of Raynaud's, evening primrose oil (EPO) - which can stop the body from making chemicals that narrows the blood vessels and magnesium – which can help to open up the blood vessels (6).
